Breedon Aggregates and Whitemountain have been jointly awarded a contract valued at up to £55m to supply and lay asphalt on the £745m Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route road project.

The 50/50 joint venture will see the companies lay more than 500,000 tonnes of asphalt material for the works, which are being constructed by AWPR Construction JV on behalf of Aberdeen Roads Limited.

Breedon and Whitemountain will each erect a mobile asphalt plant on site to service the project, utilising aggregates sourced from the locality.

In addition, they will supply any offsite aggregate and sand requirements for the asphalt products and high polished stone value aggregates for the surface course of the main carriageway.

Alan Mackenzie, chief executive of Breedon Aggregates Scotland, said: “This is our largest-ever contract award and will provide the backbone of work for our contracting division over the next two years. Importantly, the two mobile plants will mean we're self-sufficient on-site.”

At 1300 GMT, Breedon shares were 1.2% higher at 66.29p.
