Banknote, brand and tax stamp authentication technology supplier Spectra Systems received approval for its ‘TruBrand’ materials on tobacco products sold in China, it announced on Tuesday.

The AIM-traded company said the approval was issued by the Tobacco Standardization Research Center (CTSRC) in Beijing to one of its potential customers, which applied for the approval and reportedly remained “interested” in using TruBrand materials on its products.

It said the approval “should” open the way for production testing and commercialisation of the “breakthrough” smartphone technology.

Assuming this approval is granted to other applicants, which the directors said they believe is “highly likely”, other manufacturers of tobacco products in the People's Republic of China would also be able to test and potentially commercialise the technology.

“We believe the approval by the CTSRC is a critical achievement in the commercialisation process of our TruBrand technology for the large tobacco industry in China,” said Spectra CEO Nabil Lawandy.

“The opportunity for the company is significant with over 200 billion cigarette packages being sold annually in China,” Dr Lawandy added.
