Apple's WWDC Keynote: What's new?
Technology giant announces new updates to its operating systems watchOS, tvOS, iOS and introduction of macOS
- No hardware news but plenty of software developments to keep Apple fans happy
There was no hardware news at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference but there was a whole heap of new features for the technology giant's four main operating systems.
watchOS, tvOS, iOS and newly-released macOS introduced various new software improvements for their devices, which will be available in early autumn of this year.
Here's the lowdown:
watchOS
The Apple Watch's operating system will be quicker and more efficient.
Apple is increasing the speed of watch apps so they load seven times faster, according to vice president of technology Kevin Lynch.
A dock is to be released for the Apple Watch, which people can access from the side button to see and switch between apps.
People will be able to scribble responses to text messages on the Apple Watch. The feature supports multiple languages.
A new SOS mode can call emergency numbers and also send the user’s contacts a map of his or her location in case of an emergency.
The Apple Watch's operating system will be quicker and more efficient.
In addition to new activity watch faces, Apple is adding sharing features so Apple Watch wearers can compete against and message friends and family.
tvOS
The operating system for Apple TV has over 6,000 apps. A few more have been announced and one major change which allevaites the pain of some TV boxes.
Single sign-on - this removes the headaches that arrive with granting access for streaming apps. There wasn´t a lot of information about how it works, but Apple confirmed that users will only need to sign on once and gain access to all their devices.
Siri will be put to use as a remote control for the Apple TV, and also will be able to be used as a search bar.
HomeKit is arriving to iOS, allowing Apple to become ahub for the connected home.
macOS
A new name for the operating system for the Apple Mac. macOs Sierra will be the first version and will have the following abilities:
The introduction of Siri to Mac.
If you have an Apple Watch you will be able to unlock your computer without a password.
Apple will optimize storage on the Mac by keeping older files on the cloud, leaving room for new files.
Browser tabs will be spread to other applications, so tabs can be utilised to greater effect.
Picture-in-picture mode will let people watch videos in a small overlay on their computers while multitasking on other apps.
iOS 10
The majority of the keynote from Apple was dedicated to new iPhone software iOS 10. They announced a huge list of new features, here are the most important:
Apple is saving you from a click. A new feature called “raise to wake” on your lock screen will automatically show a preview of the lock screen when the device is tilted.
Further changes to the lock screen facility include swiping from left to see widgets, and swiping from right for your camera. It also includes a new control centre for music.
Siri will be made available to third-party developers. Users will be able to write messages for other apps as a result.
Apple are applying Siri to their keyboard. With Quicktype, Siri will suggest context-aware information, such as a person’s location or calendar availability.
Apple Maps will be more active, making commute times and calendar events available to users, and similar to Siri, will now be coordinated with third-party developers.
An announcement was made that Apple Music now has 15 million registered users and unveiled a familar new design. With a new font and style, the biggest change is its playlist curation entitled "For You".
Apple News, which has 60 million monthly active users, is also getting a facelift. The app will show top and trending stories, news from topics readers follow, new topics based on what they’re reading, and editors’ picks.
Snapchat's popularity has clearly rubbed off on Apple, as they attempt to make their messaging service more fun. New and bigger emojis as well as an ability to replace already written words with suitable emojis are expected.
A new messaging feature called "Invisible Ink" will allow users to hide a message until the recipient selects it. Messages will also support handwritten messages and full-screen effects.
