Ched Evans signs for Chesterfield on one-year deal

Former Welsh international had his rape charge quashed in April

Chesterfield have announced the transfer of Ched Evans, the former Wales striker who is currently awaiting retrial after having a rape charge quashed.

He was convicted of rape in 2012 but the decision was overturned in April, but he must face a retrial in October after pleading not guilty in Cardiff Crown Court last month.

According to reports, he will earn less than £2,000 a week when he joins on July 1st, 10% of what he was earning when he was dismissed by Sheffield United.

“I hope to make a valuable contribution both on and off the pitch for the football club, the fans and the community,” Evans told the Chesterfield website.

Chairman of the club David Allen has spoke of their delight to have signed such a talented player.

“We are delighted to have secured the services of an outstanding footballer, who is now keen to get back to work and score goals."

Current Chesterfield coach Danny Wilson had been Evans' manager at Sheffield United also.

The club were linked with a similar move for Evans last season, but in the end they decided it would be too risky to sign him. Evans has not played competitively since his conviction.
