The 2016 Le Mans 24 hour race could not have ended more dramatically than its 84th edition.

The overall lead of the showcase event switched over 40 times throughout the day in France. The race was alive in the final hour and the gap between leaders Toyota and chasers Porsche was fluctuating between 25 and 35 seconds.

Disaster struck for Toyota however as they approached the final lap, with driver Kazuki Nakajima stuttering over the finish line a lap early to a stop, which many thought as a mistake by the driver.

The Japanese driver reported a loss of power, and the oncoming Porsche team strolled to victory, winning their 18th title at Le Mans.

Toyota's name will be linked forever with the extraordinary 2016 race. But sadly, not on the trophy.
