Highly popular online streaming service Netflix has revealed the different variety of ways in which people watch their favourite TV shows, whether it be in a ravenous single sitting, or in a more measured, thoughtful approach.

Netflix is known for keeping data on viewership and streamig figures to itself and not revealing too much.

But this week they have analysed around 100 television series across 190 countries and created a scale based on how addictive and time-consiuming each show is.

They found that people tend to take longer and savour programming that is of a more complex narrative, or set in earlier periods. For example, shows like "House of Cards, "Mad Men", and "The West Wing" were in this category.

Surprisingly the same time frame was applied to irreverent comedies, such as the recently popular "Bojack Horseman".

The other end of the scale highlights the opposite time frame, the one where you occupy your sofa for days on end because you simply can´t stop - the definititon of the so-called "binge watching".

Programmes with eleemnts of horror, sci-fi and thriller feature heavily here, incorporating "Orange is the New Black", "The Walking Dead" and "Breaking Bad".

The more than 100 shows were judged from October of last year through May 2016. The report looked at the first season of 100 scripted series and only includes data from viewers who finished an entire first season, according to a news release.

Shows on which viewers spent less than two hours per session were deemed to have been savored and shows viewed more than the average time were considered to have been binge-watched, or devoured. Netflix said there is no relationship between a show’s viewership and where it lands on the scale.
