Labour MP Yvette Cooper has received a threatening message via Twitter in which a user asks her to stop campaigning or he will take the lives of her children and grandchildren.

Cooper has been campaigning for Britain to remain in the European Union ahead of tomorrow's historic referendum on the UK's membership of the bloc.

The threat read, "Hello, Yvette I have received your Stronger In propaganda e-mails 5 times please stop or I will kill your kids and grandkidsā€¯.

The Remain campaigner has confirmed that she has reported the incident to police, and the user's account has been suspended.

Earlier, she retweeted the post with a comment saying "this has to stop".

The security of MPs has come into question in the last week as Cooper's party colleague Jo Cox was gunned down while doing constituency work.
