The cost of Tottenham Hotspur's flash new stadium in one of London's Bremain strongholds has doubled to roughly £800m, in part due to costs soaring after UK's controversial Brexit vote last year.

The stadium is in London's Haringey borough, which voted heavily in favour of UK remaining in the EU, making the higher price tag a bitter pill for the club's faithful living locally.

Main contractor Mace was appointed in November 2015, when the build was reported to cost about £400m.

Apparently that figure dated back several years, but stadium designs had changed a lot in that period, a spokesperson for the club is reported as saying.

At a meeting of Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust in late February it was revealed that building the 61,000-seater stadium had zipped up to about £800m.

On Wednesday, it emerged that sterling's painful plunge in the wake of the Brexit vote had added some 20% to the stadium's cost, Construction News reported.

Some of the rise was also attributed to revised basement works, and work to build the new Tottenham Experience, which would house the club's shop and museum.

Construction and overtime costs were apparently also factors.
