Calls have been made for a referendum on the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland following victory for the Leave side in the United Kingdom's vote on EU membership on Thursday.

People living in the North can apply for passports from Dublin, and search trends today suggest that many are looking into obtaining them due to fears of the consequences the Brexit vote will have.

Apart from the Democrat Unionist Party, all of Northern Ireland's major political parties backed Remain, and the results showed a majority wanted to stay in the EU.

Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness told RTÉ's Morning Ireland that the case for a border poll has been strengthened by the Brexit vote, saying "we are now in uncharted waters".
