Mitsubishi falsified mileage tests back to 1991

Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors revealed on Tuesday that it had uncovered evidence of tampering with mileage testing data for its cars dating back to 1991.
The company had admitted last week that it had falsified mileage data on a number of domestic models in a bid to make the cars look more efficient.
On Tuesday, Mitsubishi Motors president Tetsuro Aikawa told a press conference that the investigation was still ongoing, and didn’t rule out that more irregularities could be revealed.
He said the company was still unsure what action it would take going forward, as so much was still unknown.
Aikawa - who last week took entire responsibility for the scandal, despite claiming to have no knowledge of it before it came to light - said he couldn’t fathom why employees would falsify such data.
The admissions last week involved 157,000 Mitsubishi eK and eK Space light passenger vehicles, and 468,000 Dayz and Dayz Roox vehicles produced under contract for Nissan.
Mitsubishi has had a policy of transparency since 2000, when it was revealed the firm had systematically concealed customer complaints and safety defects in its cars for at least 23 years.
