Friday preview: US inflation data to take centre stage

Friday is set to be yet another quiet day for scheduled news among London's listed companies, so the focus again will be on economic data from the US, as investors continue to assess how incoming indicators may affect the current monetary easing cycle.

At 1330 BST, the US Department of Commerce will release personal income and spending data for August. Included in that report will be the latest readings on the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, the core price deflator for personal consumption expenditures.

Personal income growth is expected to pick up to 0.4% from 0.3% in July, while the monthly increase in spending is set to ease to 0.3% from 0.5%.

Meanwhile, the year-on-year change in the headline personal consumption expenditures (PCE) index should have slowed to a four-year low of 2.3% from 2.5%, though the core PCE index (which excludes food and energy) is tipped to have edged higher to 2.7% from 2.6%.

The release will be closely watched in the aftermath of the Fed's bumper 50-basis point rate cut last week, after which chair Jerome Powell said a "recalibration" was necessary on the back of the recent sharp decline in inflation from the 40-year high of 5%+ in 2022.

Also scheduled for publication on Friday is the market's first look at Spanish inflation data for September, unemployment figures from Germany, and consumer confidence gauges from the eurozone and US.
