Tuesday preview: ECB speakers, US housing starts in focus

Tuesday's focus in markets would be on a raft of speakers from the European Central Bank.

During the previous week, the monetary authority had hiked interest rates in the euro area by 25 basis points, as expected.

On top of that, its President, Christine Lagarde, had all but pre-announced a further hike in July, catching some analysts on the hop.

So now, investors would be watching to see just how hawkish her colleagues on the Governing Council were regarding the outlook for rates.

Worth noting, overnight the Reserve Bank of Australia was to release the minutes of its last policy meeting, when it too had some surprised some market observers with its own hike.

In the States, at 1330 BST the Department of Commerce was scheduled to release figures for housing permits and starts in May.
