Tuesday preview: German industrial production, Whitbread in focus
The market spotlight on Tuesday will be on industrial production data out of Germany and a report on the US jobs market.
For the latter, investors are looking for a sharp reversal from April's 17.9% month-on-month drop as the euro area's largest economy navigates the lifting of lockdown measures imposed because of Covid-19 while at the same time attempting to keep new infections at bay.
Stateside, the JOLTS labour market survey for May will be scrutinised for clues regarding the near-term outlook for jobs in the world's largest economy.
Here too, authorities are attempting to contain outbreaks of the virus but amid fears that an early reopening will force lockdown measures to be reimposed in many, but perhaps not all, states.
Overnight meanwhile, central bankers in Australia will meet to decide on interest rates, while in China May data for the country's foreign exchange reserves are set for release.
In the corporate space, Costa owner, Whitbread, will update investors on trading during its first quarter.
According to UBS analyst Jarrod Castle, revenues per available room in the UK collapsed by about 74% over the period and the company was likely to have fared even worse.
Investors' focus would be on the likelihood of a recovery in volumes, drop through, cost control and capital expenditures.
JD Sports meanwhile is due out with its full-year numbers, with the consensus anticipating sales of £5,960.4m for earnings per share of 32.5p.
