Tuesday preview: UK employment report, ECB's Lane in focus

Investors' focus on Tuesday was expected to be on the UK employment report for the month of August.

Consensus was for the rate of unemployment to be unchanged from July's print of 3.6%, but due to higher rates of inactivity and not due to stronger employment, economists at Barclays Research said.

The three-month year-on-year rate of increase in headline average weekly earnings on the other hand was expected to jump by five tenths of a percentage point to 5.9%, albeit due to base effects.

Tuesday's economic calendar across the Channel was light with speeches from European Central Bank chief economist, Philip Lane, at 1345 BST and 1900 BST, likely to be in the spotlight.

In the US, at 1100 BST the National Federation of Independent Businesses was scheduled to publish its small business optimism index for September.
