Tuesday preview: UK jobs report, US debt ceiling talks in the spotlight

The market spotlight on Tuesday would fall on the UK employment report for March.

In particular, it was expected to show that growth in average weekly earnings, excluding bonuses, picked up to a year-on-year clip of 6.8% over the three months to April, up from 6.6% for over the previous three months.

Also due out, overnight, was a barrage of key activity indicators for April in the People's Republic of China covering fixed asset investment, industrial production and retail sales.

Later in the session, investors' attention was to shift back to the US, where President Joe Biden and the Republican speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy, were due to hold face-to-face talks.

Monthly retail sales and industrial production figures for April were also due out Stateside, at 1330 BST and 1415 BST, respectively.

That would be on top of speeches from at least four top Fed officials, starting with the Cleveland Fed's Loretta Mester at 1315 BST.

Across the Channel meanwhile, at 1000 BST the ZEW institute would release its closely followed gauge of economic confidence for Germany in May.
