The focus in financial markets on Tuesday will be on the US and China.

In the former, consumer price data for June are expected to show that the annual rate of inflation was unchanged from the month before at 4.9%.

Nevertheless, economists at Barclays Research caution that upside surprises are still possible, especially over the summer, although price pressures may have peaked in April.

Chinese foreign trade figures for June meanwhile will be published overnight with investors likely to be looking for signs of a mid-year slowdown in activity.

No major economic releases are due out in the UK.

Across the Channel meanwhile, at their regularly scheduled weekly meeting, European Union finance ministers may adopt the first Council implementing decisions on member states' recoevery and resilience plans, Barclays added.

Final readings on French and German consumer prices for June are also expected, at 0700 BST and 0745 BST, respectively.

No major corporate announcements are scheduled in the UK on Tuesday.

Across the Pond, investors will be waiting on Goldman Sachs to kick off the second quarter reporting season.

The investment bank is expected to post earnings per share of $9.35.

Its results will nevertheless follow on from the bumper showing in the first quarter of 2021 and over the last three months of 2020.

Furthermore, the lack of volatility in financial markets during the quarter was likely a drag, said Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets UK.
