Tuesday preview: US CPI, UK employment in focus
The market spotlight on Tuesday was expected to continue to be on the banking sector with investors keen to see whether the relative calm in the US was mirrored on this side of the Pond.
Indeed, events were moving exceedingly quickly with economists at Barclays Research and Goldman Sachs having moved to predict that the Federal Reserve would now not hike rates at all at its 21-22 March meeting.
Against that backdrop, US consumer price figures for the month of February were expected to reveal a slowdown in the annual rate of increase in headline consumer prices from 6.4% in January to 6.1%.
Nevertheless, recent events meant those inflation figure were taking a back seat in investors' minds.
Also due out were UK employment data for January at 0700 GMT from the Office for National Statistics.
