Tuesday preview: US Federal Reserve, Petrofac in focus

The market spotlight on Tuesday will be firmly on the US central bank, with at least five top officials, including chairman Jerome Powell set to deliver speeches.

A slew of indicators on the state of the US housing market are also set for release, including new home sales data for May, at 1500 BST, and FHFA's home price index for April and the S&P Case Shiller home price indices for April, with the latter two expected at 1400 BST.

Back in the UK,, consultancy Kantar was scheduled to publish its grocery market share figures for the 12 weeks to 16 June at 0800 BST, followed by the results of the Confederation of British Industry's Distributive Trades survey for June, at 1100 BST.

Across the Channel, speeches were scheduled from the European Central Bank's Luis de Guindos at 0815 BST and from executive board member, Benoit Coeure at 1815 BST.

Petrofac and Carpetright are among the corporates that are scheduled to update markets on Tuesday.

For the former's trading update, analysts at UBS were expecting information on progress on the existing portfolio, some commentary on the company's year-to-date order intake and cash position.

On orders, the Swiss broker noted that Petrofac had received just one major award YTD, leaving its order intake in Engineering and Construction running below its target for a book-to-build of greater than 1.0.

As regards its cash position, UBS said there was a chance that Petrofac had slipped into a net debt position at the half-year stage.

For Carpetright, the onus would be on whether company was continuing to see an improving trend on its topline growth as in April, when it said that sales were moving towards positive territory, said CMC Markets UK's Michael Hewson.
