Wednesday preview: Eurozone inflation data, US private payrolls report

Eurozone inflation is expected to have fallen to zero growth in the year to September, according to estimates ahead of Wednesday’s report.

The consumer price index rose 0.1% year-on-year in August and analysts predict it slowed to 0% in September, well below the European Central Bank’s target of just under 2%.

The report will come a day after data showed German inflation came in at 0% in September compared to year ago, missing forecasts of 0.1% and down from the previous month’s 0.2%.

The ECB has said it would consider expanding its quantitative easing programme if the outlook for inflation remained weak.

The Eurozone will also see the release of the unemployment rate for August on Wednesday with economists pencilling in 10.9%, unchanged from the prior month.

The German unemployment rate is expected to hold at 6.4% in September. Separately, German retail sales data is projected to reveal a 3.3% year-on-year increase in August.

Across the Pond, ADP’s US private payrolls data will be published ahead of the all-important non-farm payrolls report. Analysts forecast US employers added 190,000 jobs in September, the same amount as August.

The Federal Reserve is monitoring a wide range of economic data, including labour market report, in determining whether the US is ready for its first rate hike in almost a decade. Fed Chair Janet Yellen has said the central bank expects to raise rates this year unless the global economic outlook worsens.
