Wednesday preview: UK consumer credit, Spanish and German CPI in focus

Investors' focus in the middle of the week will be on the latest UK consumer credit and mortgage applications numbers.

Consumer credit was expected to have held up during the month of October, although according to Michael Hewson at CMC Markets recent resilience could be the result of consumers adding to their levels of debt.

As for mortgage approvals, the recent retreat in interest rates may have offered some respite but "recent housing data would appear to suggest that consumers are holding back when it comes to the purchase of a new house," Hewson added.

Also at 0700 GMT, mortgage lender Nationwide was scheduled to release its house price index for November.

Across the Channel meanwhile, preliminary readings for consumer price inflation in Spain and Germany were due out, at 0800 GMT and 1300 GMT, respectively.

Stateside, at 1330 GMT the Department of Commerce would publish revised data for third quarter gross domestic product growth.

Further afield, overnight rate-setters in New Zealand will announce their latest interest rate decision.
