Wednesday preview: US Fed decision, UK GDP in the spotlight

Trading on Wednesday was likely to be restrained, barring surprises, as investors waited on the US Federal Reserve's policy announcement after the close of London markets.

The Federal Open Market Committee, its main policy-setting body, was expected to announce a decision to skip a further rate hike.

But investors were keen for insights into policymakers' thinking looking out to the rest of 2023 and even for 2024.

Ahead of the announcement, at 1330 BST the Department of Labor was to publish producer price figures for May.

Consensus was for a dip in inflation at the wholesale level of 0.1% month-on-month.

Against that backdrop, at 0700 BST the Office of National Statistics was expected to release gross domestic product data showing a 0.2% month-on-month pace of expansion for May.

Industrial production was seen edging back by 0.1% after a 0.7% on the month gain during April, construction output was expected to be flat.

In parallel, the trade deficit was seen widening from -£2.9bn to -£3.6bn.
