Director dealings: Dunelm CEO and wife go on share shopping trip

After shares in the homewares retailer sank below their post-referendum low, Dunelm chief executive John Browett and his wife popped out on a bargain-hunting trip and returned home with a bagful of shares.

Browett, who was appointed by the FTSE 250 company in January after a curtailed stint at Apple took the shine of his time at Tesco, and his wife bought roughly £150,000 shares at an average price of close to 821p.

Last week, Dunelm revealed first quarter revenue fell 1.8% due to the unseasonably warm weather.

Like-for-like sales growth from stores and the home delivery service also decreased by 3.8% to £187.5m, which was blamed on the unusually warm weather during the quarter which had a dampening effect on store footfall.

Having opened six new superstores in the last financial year, Dunelm plans to open nine new by the end of the current financial year, of which four should be up and running by the end of 2016.

Chief executive John Browett, said: "We are looking forward to a stronger second quarter as we continue to invest in extra seasonal space, new till systems, store refits and new store openings. We should also benefit from weaker comparatives.

"We continue to focus on our key initiatives whilst ensuring we maintain our unique offer of tremendous value for money, combined with an unrivalled range and great service."

A note from HSBC on Monday, with a 'buy' rating and a 1,050p target price, said comparatives from last year will ease in coming quarters and it would expect the business to return to positive LFL growth.

"Indeed this is not the first time Dunelm has reported such an impact, e.g. 1Q14 when unseasonal weather saw LFL sales fall 5.3%. However, subsequent quarters saw LFL growth quickly return to normal."
