Director dealings: Tesco chairman shows support

Tesco chairman John Allan dipped into the market to show his confidence in the turnaround as shown in the grocer's final results, although with the shares on the slide he would have saved himself several thousand if he'd waited until Thursday.

The company said on Thursday that the previous day Allan spent more than £28,000 as he snapped up 15,000 shares at 188.73p.

The chairman also spent £90,370 as he bought 100,000 bonds, specifically 5.5% 2033 Tesco medium term notes, paid for at a price of 90.37p each.

Since Allan's share purchase, the shares have fallen to 177.62p by the close on Thursday after chief executive Dave Lewis took some of the froth off a encouraging set of final results with cautious comments statements to reporters on a conference call.

Lewis said hitting the consensus forecasts of a trading profit of £1.25bn for the current financial year would be “a substantial, substantial achievement”.

However, Tesco had earlier revealed a return to the black with a £162m pre-tax profit that marked a turnaround from the previous year's record £6.3bn loss.
