BP’s newly-appointed non-executive director John Sawers bought 13,528 shares in the oil giant at 369p each.

Sawers, who was head of the UK Secret Intelligence Service from 2009 to 2014, was appointed to BP’s board in May.

BP shares were under pressure on Monday as oil prices slumped after the OPEC meeting failed to lead to production cuts, with West Texas Intermediate falling below $40 a barrel and Brent down 2.50% to $41.95 a barrel.

Sawers spent 36 years working for the British Government in international affairs and security.

He completed his five year tenure as chief of MI6 in November 2014. Prior to that, he was the UK's Ambassador to the United Nations, Political Director of the Foreign Office, Special Representative in Iraq, Ambassador to Cairo, and Foreign Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister.
