Brexit campaigners insult Macron victory with Nazi reference
A pro-Brexit campaign group said the French people had “rolled over” as they had in 1940 by electing the centrist Emmanuel Macron in Sunday's presidential election.
Leave.EU, set up by the right-wing MEP Nigel Farage, used its Twitter social media account to voice displeasure at Macron's resounding victory.
With 98% of the vote counted, Macron had 20,429,650 votes for 65.8%, double Le Pen’s 10,608,109 votes for 34.2%.
“The French rolled over in 1940. This time they've saved Germany the fuel and bullets,” the group said.
It also used a newspaper front page from 1940 reporting the French surrender to the Nazis.
Farage said: ““A giant deceit has been voted for today. Macron will be Juncker’s puppet,” a reference to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.
Macron was the country’s youngest ever president at 39, and was also the first president to come from outside the two main parties since the current republic was formed in 1958.
