Week ahead: All eyes on referendum outcome

Thursday, 23 June, and the result of the UK’s referendum on whether or not to continue within the European Union is all that will matter this week for financial markets.

Yes, many other important events are also scheduled for throughout the week, but their potential implications for investors – especially those in the UK and Europe - pale by comparison.

Also worth noting, data set for release on 18 June regarding new home price data in China might be particularly worth watching.

“Though it’s not our baseline we think the PBOC would cut policy interest rates if needed to sustain the housing recovery,” economists at ING said in a research note sent to clients.

Fed chair Janet Yellen’s half-yearly testimony on monetary policy before the US Senate’s Banking Committee, on Wednesday, might also garner a fair bit of attention.

Readings on orders for US durable goods in May and consumer confidence in June may also help to inform investors’ views on the current state of the US economy.
