Week ahead: Carney in the spotlight

The latest employment and retail sales data, due out on Wednesday and Thursday, will set the stage for the Monetary Policy Committee's meeting on Thursday.

Rate-setters at the Bank of England are expected to keep all policy levers at their current settings, given the recent resilience shown by the British economy and perhaps also out of a desire to wait and see what measures the new Chancellor unveils in the Autumn Budget on 23 November.

Dr. Howard Archer, chief UK+European economist at IHS Markit, expected the Old Lady On Threadneedle Street to cut rates from 0.25% to 0.10% in November or in early 2017 at the latest should it decide to postpone a decision on further stimulus until later.

"[That is because] there is clearly an increased chance that the BoE will sit tight on inestrest rates in November given the current resilience of the econmy, especially as the MPC may well want to see what Chancellor Philip Hammond comes up with in the Autmn Statement," Dr. Archer said.

Economists at Credit Suisse on the other hand held out the possibility that Bank may 'tone down' its dovish tone, saying that if the economy continued to perform better than expected (relative to the BoE's own forecasts for growth of 0.1% quarter-on-quarter in the third quarter) then the need to ease further come November would decrease.

Ahead of that event, analysts at Deutsche Bank pointed out a late addition to the calendar for Fed speakers, with the 'dovish' Governor Lael Branard having been added to the line-up for 12 September, which may be an attempt to raise expectations for rate hikes, should see sound a more hawkish note.

Also of great importance, figures on Chinese fixed asset investment, industrial production and retail sales were set for release on Tuesday, together with a raft of indicators on the state of the US economy towards the end of the week.

The Swiss National Bank was also scheduled to decide on policy on Thursday.
