Week ahead: China data at the top of the agenda

With the latest set of US jobs figures out of the way (and after several top brokers pushed out their forecast for the next Fed rate hike to September) the spotlight will shift back to Asia next week, markets' other bubgear of late.

At the top of the economic agenda will be Chinese trade figures for April, followed close behind by the latest foreign exchange reserves data for that region's largest economy, first thing on Monday morning.

Chinese consumer price and total social financing data are also scheduled for release, on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

A speech from Bank of Japan governor Haruhiko Kuroda at the end of the week, on Friday, might also be worth watching.

His remarks will precede US retail sales data for April due out that same day. Not to be forgotten, it was less hiring in retail that appeared to be largely to blame for the 'miss' in the latest non-farm payrolls report.

In the UK, the Monetary Policy Committee is due to decided on interest rates on Thursday. Given that Governor Carney is prohibited from speaking his mind on the possible implications of Brexit (he is legally obliged to sit on the fence, or be 'neutral') markets will therefore be watching for any clues as to the MPCs thinking about the current international backdrop.

Data set to be released on industrial production, house prices, retail sales prices and the NIESR's latest rolling estimate of GDP growth will all make for interesting reading, given the possibility that the economy is slowing sharply going into the 23 June vote.
