Week ahead: Euro area PMIs, US GDP in focus

The coming week will likely see trading volumes fall off due to the Thanksgiving holidays Stateside, with market action likely to be restrained by the fact that many traders will be away from their desks.

Nevertheless, the flow of so-called 'high-frequency' indicators will pick up significantly.

First out of the gate on Monday morning will be the preliminary manufacturing sector purchasing managers’ index for the Eurozone and the bloc’s main individual economies in the month of November.

The German PMI is expected to slip to a reading of 52.0 on the back of weakness in emerging markets and the Volkswagen scandal.

The IFO institute’s German business confidence index for that same month, which is scheduled for release on Thursday, should provide some further colour on the state of euro area’s largest economy.

Euro area money supply and credit statistics for October are also keenly awaited given the urgent need for a pick-up in bank lending.

Stateside, the focus will be on the second reading for gross domestic product in the third quarter.

At the end of the week that will be complemented with ONS’s second release of UK GDP data for the same quarter. Consensus is pointing to an unchanged reading of 2.3% year-on-year.

Also on Friday, Japan’s national statistics bureau will release consumer price data for the month of October.
