Week ahead: Not everything that happens at Jackson Hole stays there

In the coming week, the spotlight will be on the Federal Reserve bank of Kansas City's Symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

The star in this year's line-up at the gathering of the great and the good in central banking, on 24-26 August, had been expected to be European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi.

Yet intense speculation that he might signal another move towards tapering the ECB's quantitative easing programme at that venue were upended mid-week by a source-based report to the contrary.

However, given recent heavy gains in the value of the single currency, anything he might have to add (or not) about the currency might be equally important, Deutsche Bank told clients.

"The stakes are high. At current euro levels, core inflation normalises by 2020 even if Eurozone output growth averages 1.7% over that horizon. However, if the euro appreciates to 1.30 dollars by next year; output growth through to 2020 must be maintained at the current impressive pace of 2.2%, to compensate for the currency’s disinflationary drag.

"[...] Mr Draghi should choose his words carefully – what happens in Jackson Hole does not stay there," they told clients in a research note.

Back in the UK, the data calendar will be on the light side, with public sector finance data for July scheduled for Monday and a reading on second quarter gross domestic for Thursday.

In the euro area, preliminary service and manufacturing sector purchasing managers indices for August will be in focus.

At the tail-end of the week, on Friday, investors will be watching out for the latest US durable goods orders numbers and the German IFO institute's business climate index.
