Week ahead: General Election fallout, BoE in focus

The course of political events in the UK will be front-and-centre on investors' minds in the coming week, easily overshadowing even the US central bank's policy announcement on Wednesday.

At stake now, following the 8 June General Election, was the sustainability of the current government and - possibly - the outcome of the Brexit negotiations, with all the of the medium-term implications that has for the British economy.

Against that backdrop, or perhaps precisely because of it, the content of the Monetary Policy Committee's deliberations on Thursday, in the form of the minutes of its most recent policy meeting, would be of special interest.

Stateside, all eyes were on the Federal Reserve's own policy announcement scheduled for the day before.

The Federal Open Market Committee was widely-expected to hike its main policy rate by 25 basis points to a range of between 1.0% and 1.25%.

However, contrary to US rate-setters' own forecasts for the rest of the year, financial markets were only pricing-in 50% odds of a third interest rate hike in 2017, in December.

Together with the recent ructions on Capitol Hill, that had led some observers to speculate about the possibility of slightly more 'dovish' guidance from the Fed.

Acting as a backdrop, Chinese data on fixed asset investment and industrial production for May were scheduled for release on Wednesday.

In terms of proper data releases, figures on US consumer prices and retail sales were set for release on Wednesday, followed by the Federal Reserve bank of Philadelphia's factory sector gauge on Thursday and the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index the next day.

The Bank of Japan was also expected to announce its decision on monetary policy on Friday.

Investors were also expected to keep an eye out for the result of the Italian local elections on Saturday, with the first round of France's parliamentary elections set for the next day.
