Week ahead: Global PMIs, UK data in focus

The focus in financial markets over the coming week will be on global manufacturing and services sector conditions with a raft of survey results due out in the euro area, UK and US on Friday.

Both across the Channel and in the UK, factory activity is expected to have slowed very slightly, more than offset by a pick up in services as Covid-19 restrictions began to be lifted and the pandemic retreated.

Also due out on home shores is a reading for consumer prices in April, come Wednesday, which is expected to reveal a jump in headline harmonised CPI from a year-on-year pace of 1.0% for April to 1.6% in May.

UK retail sales data for April meanwhile, which is scheduled for release on Friday, is forecast to show a 36.8% year-on-year surge.

Stateside, the spotlight may well be on a speech from Federal Vice-President, Richard Clarida, on Monday, with investors keen for real-time insights into the central bank's thinking.

The minutes of the Fed's most recent policy meeting, on Wednesday, will also be closely scrutinised for the same reason.

Further afield, Monday will bring with it the release of a barrage of activity indicators for April in the People's Republic of China.
