Week ahead: Global trade, Brexit, EMs still in focus
Investors will have little choice but to keep their eye on developments on multiple fronts over the coming week, with global trade talks between the US and China, or the lack thereof, likely to be the biggest driver of markets around the world.
At the weekend, it was reported that the US administration might be set to announce fresh tariffs on another $200.0bn-worth of Chinese goods, but of 10%, not 20%.
However, on Sunday, the Journal reported that Beijing might snub Washington's offer to restart talks.
Against that backdrop, on Tuesday the European Union's General Affairs Council was expected to analyse the current state of talks on the UK's withdrawal and discussions on the framework for the future relationship with Britain.
In parallel, readings on consumer prices, retail sales and public sector borrowing were set for release starting from Wednesday.
Emerging markets were also expected to figure prominently in the headlines, especially after the Central Bank of Russia surprised analysts with an interest rate hike on Friday.
Policymakers in Brazil were scheduled to decide on interest rates on Wednesday, followed by their peers in South Africa on Thursday.
Interest rate decisions were also expected in Hungary (Tuesday), Thailand (Wednesday), Switzerland (Thursday) and Norway (Thursday).
Stateside, the main economic releases would be the Philly Fed's manufacturing sector gauge on Thursday and readings on housing starts and existing home sales on Wednesday and Thursday.
Over in the euro area meanwhile, Monday would bring with it a reading on Eurozone consumer prices for the month of August.
