Week ahead: Jackson Hole, Global PMIs in the spotlight

The spotlight in financial markets over the coming week will be on the Federal Reserve's eagerly-awaited central banking symposium at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Friday.

Expectations had been running high that Fed officials would use that venue to lay the groundwork for the start of 'tapering' its purchases of public debt.

However, against the backdrop of the Delta variant of Covid-19, the outcome of the symposium might be a bit less hawkish than expected.

Ahead of Jackson Hole, Monday will see the release of a raft of Purchasing Managers' Indices from around the world.

Whether in the UK, US or euro area, those PMIs are expected to show growth in manufacturing and services continuing to expand at a similarly brisk pace as in June.

Readings on second quarter gross domestic product growth in Germany and the US, on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively, are also likely to draw a fair bit of attention.

Last, but not least, on Friday, the University of Michigan is due to release a final reading on US consumer confidence in August.

Yet economist are anticipating but a small bounce from the lows hit at the start of the month.
