Week ahead: Parliament, US-China trade in focus

All eyes during the coming week will be on Brexit and US-China trade relations with matters possibly coming to a head in the case UK amid rapidly increasing speculation that new elections might be called possibly even as soon as over the next few days.

Parliament is set to return from its summer recess and after the Prime Minister chose to prorogue the chamber, opposition MPs are expected to waste no time before they move to try and block a 'no deal' Brexit via the legislative route.

Investors will also be hoping for positive signs regarding the result of the latest trade talks between Washington and Beijing, including the timing of the next round of trade talks.

Against that potentially volatile mix, the monthly US jobs report is set to be released at the end of the week and although the consensus was for a steady pace of monthly hiring of 165,000 new people in August, some analysts believed the data migh come undershoot forecasts significantly.

To take note of, on Wednesday the US Federal Reserve is due to publish its Beige Book ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee's next policy meeting, with four Fed speakers expected to deliver speeches that same day.

In parallel, multiple top European Central Bank officials are set to take to the podium.

The private sector-compiled Caixin China factory sector Purchasing Managers' Index, which was scheduled for release on Monday, may also have an outsized impact on financial markets.

Commenting on the market backdrop over the next week, economists at Barclays Research told clients "High uncertainty over US-China trade policies, Brexit and other political and geopolitical developments continues to weigh on the global outlook. Although the volatile news flow leaves room for optimism, we believe the patterns so far vindicate our scepticism about the likelihood of sudden deals for US-China trade or Brexit.

"[...] Facing this ambiguous outlook, central bankers seem to be diverging in their interpretations and policy recommendations."
