Week Ahead. SVB, US CPI, ECB in focus
All eyes over the coming week would be on collapse of venture capital-focused lender SVB in the US and its fallout.
US regulators moved at the weekend to limit the risks of possible contagion and analysts appeared to agree that it was not a 'Lehman moment', in reference to the collapse of investment bank Lehman Brothers in 2008, which set the Great Financial Crisis in full swing.
The coming sessions would hopefully yield sufficient information to put investors' worst fears to rest, but investor sentiment had taken a big hit and market participants were exceedingly wary.
Against that backdrop, US consumer price data due out on Tuesday was expected to reveal a decline in the annual rate of inflation from 6.4% for January to 6.0%.
Some economists cautioned that there were both upside and downside risks to the consensus forecast.
Core CPI meanwhile was seen ticking lower by a tenth of a percentage point to 5.5%.
Nonetheless, it appeared that the news out of the US banking sector would drown out the week's economic repeorts.
Also due out during the week were readings for US retail sales, on Wednesday, as well for industrial production and consumer confidence, the latter two both on Friday.
On home shores, the market spotlight would be on the Budget, come Tuesday.
In the euro area, policymakers at the European Central were scheduled to announce their latest policy decision on Thursday.
Some economists believed that SVB's collapse and market ructions might lead the ECB to hike rates by 25 basis points instead of by 50bp.
China would also be in the market spotlight, on Wednesday, as the National Bureau of Statistics released activity indicators covering fixed asset investment, industrial production and retail sales for the month of February.
