Week ahead: US/China data, OPEC+ in focus
The market spotlight over the coming will be on a slew of economic indicators in the US and China referring the months of March and April, and therefore the initial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on those two economic powers, two of the world's largest.
More recently, said analysts at Barclays Research, the certainties of policy action across the globe have more than offset the uncertainty around Covid-19 related developments - especially as regards new infections in Asia and the duration of lockdowns - and the resulting hit to economic activity.
With that in mind, investors will be continuing to scrutinise the latest incoming data and Covid-19 news to try and determine what the full fallout of the pandemic will be.
In parallel, they will also be looking out for potential new policy initiatives, including talk of a fourth economic relief package in the US, a potential OPEC+ deal to stabilise oil prices and the euro area's decision to activate the European Stability Mechanism.
Stateside, the spotlight will be on March retail sales and industrial production data due out on Wednesday, followed by the Philly Fed's closely-watched regional manufacturing gauge on Thursday.
On the other side of the globe, Chinese foreign trade data for March are due out on Tuesday and for GDP, industrial production and retail sales in March on Friday.
