Week ahead: Vodafone and Burberry report; UK jobs data and US retail sales eyed

Next week sees the release of results from the likes of Vodafone, Tui and Burberry, while investors will also be keeping an eye out for the latest UK jobs data, US retail sales and the German ZEW survey.

The latest ILO unemployment rate, claimant count change and average earnings will be released in the UK on Tuesday. RBC Capital Markets said the very large monthly gain of 244,000 in January is still being captured in the ONS’s rolling three-month employment growth estimate.

"That by itself should ensure that we will see another impressive rate of job growth in the latest labour market report which we also expect to show the unemployment rate remaining below 4% for a third successive month.

"For wages, our view is that wage growth has peaked for the time being and we expect to see a slight moderation in wage growth in coming months and expect both the whole economy and regular pay growth measures to slow slightly this month."

Retail sales figures for April will be the main event in the US on Wednesday, with ING expecting some solid numbers as consumer spending makes a comeback in the second quarter.

"Consumer spending growth slowed during the first quarter but with the jobs market in good health and wage growth continuing to pick-up, the fundamental backdrop points to a decent rebound during the second quarter. This is one reason why we think a Fed rate cut is unlikely in the foreseeable future," said analyst James Smith.

On the corporate front, Vodafone will release its preliminary results for the year ending 31 March on Tuesday. The Share Centre said investors in the telecoms giant will be very disappointed in the share price given it has nearly halved in just over a year following competition issues in India and growth concerns in its various European markets.

"This has brought about the question over whether management will seek to cut back on the very generous dividend, therefore any reassurances over this will give a significant boost to the share price. Investors will also look out for comment on the group's various M&A and partnerships activity."

Meanwhile, half-year results are due from Tui on Wednesday. On a divisional basis, UBS expects the tour operator business to report a loss of €320m, with headwinds from the Easter timing, as well as a year-on-year weakening of end markets. In the hotels segment, it expects pressure on revenue per available room in Spain and a more flattish Revpar development for the Caribbean leading to EBITA of €69m, down 19% year-on year. In the cruise division, UBS expects a strong delivery, with EBITA up around 11% on the year to €61m.

Luxury brand Burberry will be making the headlines on Thursday as it releases its preliminary results. The Share Centre noted that slowing global growth has had its impact on the group’s sales, more specifically sapping confidence among key Chinese consumers.

"Store closures will also hit sales making the numbers from online and app sales all the more important. It will also be a crucial indicator, although still at the early stages, of whether the new management and the new chief creative officers design strategies are transferring to increased interest among the wealthy fashion conscious."
