A car explosion killed at least one person in central Berlin on Tuesday morning.

Local media reported police as saying they were unsure of the exact cause of the blast, but suspected an explosive inside the vehicle.

A Volkswagen Passat was involved in the explosion on Bismarckstraße while driving, Berliner Polizei said. The car's driver died of serious injuries before emergency services arrived.

"Our investigators expect it was an explosive device, which caused the vehicle to explode," the police said in a tweet, in German.

One eyewitness reportedly told the Berliner Zeitung they heard an extremely loud bang and felt a vibration from more than half a mile away.

The Zeitung also quoted police as warning that other blasts may follow, urging residents to close their windows and stay away from the street.
