CMA moves to have Viagogo found in contempt of court

UK competition watchdog the Competition and Markets Authority has decided to step up action against controversial ticket reseller website Viagogo after it failed to fully comply with the terms of a court order.

The CMA will look to have the website found in contempt of court after it neglected a court order designed to protect users, despite allowing it a grace period to make the necessary changes.

The court order demanded Viagogo display information such as whether or not those purchasing tickets could be turned away at the door despite paying well above face value.

A CMA spokesperson said: "The CMA has today warned Viagogo it is still not compliant with the court order we secured, requiring improved information be displayed about the tickets listed for resale on its site.

"Although some improvements have been made since we first demanded action to address areas of non-compliance, further checks have shown there are still issues of concern.

"For a company not to comply with a court order is clearly very serious. We are therefore now preparing to take legal action to ask a court to find Viagogo in contempt."

If Viagogo was found in contempt of court, it could result in the company being fined or could potentially lead to the imprisonment of its directors.
