The first confirmed case of Ebola in the US was diagnosed late on Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed.

Bloomberg and CNBC are among the sources reporting that a patient was being tested for Ebola at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas and had been placed in "strict isolation" due to the symptoms and recent travel history.

In a press conference, CDC Director Tom Frieden said the patient had been traveling to Liberia, where he may have contracted the disease and he sought care upon his return to the US on 20 September.

"It is certainly possible that someone who had contact with this individual [...] could develop Ebola in the coming weeks," said Frieden.

Frieden attempted to allay concerns about Ebola's contagious effect, claiming that officials would halt the spread.

"There is no doubt in my mind that we will stop it here," he said.

Over 3,000 people have died from Ebola since the virus was first identified in Guinea six months ago.
