Grenfell Tower survivors to be rehoused in luxury complex
The UK government has bought 68 flats in a luxury west London apartment block in order to rehouse the survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire.
Communities secretary Sajid Javid announced on Wednesday that the flats would be made available to lose who lost their homes in the tragedy, which so far has claimed the lives of 79 people.
The £2bn luxury block in Kensington currently offers apartments starting at £1.5m, with some of the most expensive flats going for around £8.5m.
Residents will be able to move into the properties, which are located 1.5 miles from the site of the fire, in July and August and Javid said that it was the government’s ‘duty’ to support them.
"Our priority is to get everyone who has lost their home permanently rehoused locally as soon as possible, so that they can begin to rebuild their lives. The government will continue to do everything we can as fast as we can to support those affected by this terrible tragedy," Javid said.
The complex boasts facilities such as a swimming pool and spa area, as well as a private cinema.
City of London Corporation purchased the flats in a deal negotiated by the Homes and Communities Agency, and will become part of its social housing listings.
