Junior doctors have called off the first planned week of strikes after warnings from senior doctors and NHS leaders that the action could endanger patients.

In a statement, the chair of the British Medical Association’s (BMA) junior doctors committee Dr Ellen McCourt said that the doctors’ union was suspending the industrial action planned for the week of 12 September.

She went on to tell health secretary Jeremy Hunt that he now has a month to stop the imposition of the new contract as the next three strikes in the coming months are still scheduled to go through.

The Department of Health has not yet made their response to the BMA.
