Britain’s £2.2bn kebab industry had its big night out on Wednesday, with the fourth annual British Kebab Awards taking place in London.
The night was attended by a number of MPs, lords and baronesses, councillors, community representatives, business people and kebab enthusiasts.
Among them was vegetarian and teetotaller, and “aficionado of kebab shops” Jeremy Corbyn.
The Labour leader implored Britons to add salad to their next kebab to ensure they were getting a balanced diet, and spoke of his love for falafel.
“I’m always very pleased whenever I get to any kebab shop to enjoy a good falafel,” he said.
“When people buy kebabs, I want them to have salad on top, so they can have the balanced diet we all need.”
Among the winners were Curipza Takeaway of Bishop’s Stortford, which won best delivery restaurant, and The Best Turkish Kebab of Stoke Newington, which took home the trophy for best takeaway in London.
In North and West London, Durum Restaurant won best kebab restaurant, while Cappadocio in Kingston got best restaurant in South London.
Outside the capital, Mevan Restaurant won the best restaurant outside London, while The Sphinx won best in Northern Ireland, Pizza Choice the best in Wales and Nawroz the best in Scotland.
