Thousands of City commuters were being advised to seek alternate travel plans on Tuesday afternoon, as the London Bridge area was on lockdown due to a major security alert.

London Bridge railway station and its adjacent bus stops were evacuated, as were a number of surrounding office buildings, with London Bridge itself being closed to traffic.

Police were seen guarding a number of cordons in the area, with the London Fire Bridgade also present.

Both the Metropolitan Police and British Transport Police confirmed they were present, having been called following a security alert at 1340 GMT.

It was understood a suspicious vehicle was behind the alert, and a bomb disposal robot had been deployed to the area.

Network Rail confirmed the London Bridge mainline station remained closed, with no services terminating or running through it.

That meant there were also no services running from Cannon Street, Charing Cross or Waterloo East, as those lines run through London Bridge.
