A major security operation was launched in Brussels on Tuesday morning, when a man contacted police to tell them he had an explosives belt on him.

The area around the City2 shopping centre in the heart of the Belgian capital was cordoned off after the man was arrested at 0530 local time (0430 BST).

It's understood the explosives belt did not contain any explosives.

The country's crisis centre said it was monitoring the situation.

Prime Minister Charles Michel told media outside the centre that the situation was under control, but that security services remained on alert.

Belgium has been under a high threat level from terrorism since attacks on Paris in November, and on Brussels itself in March.
