Workers aged 55 to 64 feel their age has put them at a disadvantage when applying for jobs ,according to a survey by jobsite totaljobs.

Based on a poll conducted with over 4000 jobseekers in August 63% of those aged 55 to 64 felt their job prospects were at risk because of their age with only 6% seeing their age as an advantage.

John Salt, group sales director at totaljobs, said: "Our research shows that age discrimination, whether conscious or unconscious, still exists and is still an issue affecting many jobseekers.”

This proved the opposite for the younger generation, with far fewer experiencing discrimination because they were young.

For those aged between 16 and 24, only 33% said their age counted against them, which fell to 21% for 25 to 34 year olds.

"Older generations bring with them a wealth of experience and knowledge. In many cases, candidates with more experience tend to be more confident and able to creatively problem solve based on both the life and work experiences they have dealt with over the years," said Salt.

Employment Minister Damian Hinds said: "I want to see more employers supporting older workers and taking full advantage of the benefits they bring to their business and our economy."
