The Duke of Edinburgh is to retire from his royal duties in the autumn.

Prince Philip, 95, would attend existing fixtures until August, but would no longer accept new invitations. He was a patron, president or member of more than 780 organisations.

The duke's decision was supported by the Queen, Buckingham Palace said. The Queen would continue to carry out a full programme of official engagements.

The pair was set to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary later this year.

Over the decades, Prince Philip has brought light-hearted moments to many a formal occasion, most frequently with his repertoire of sometimes ill-chosen one-liners.
