A shooting at a park in Virginia, US has left five people injured, including prominent congressman Steve Scalise.

The early morning attack took place during a congressional baseball practice in the town of Alexandria, with two police officers who engaged the attacker also reportedly among those who were wounded during the incident.

Republican Scalise is the current majority whip in the House of Representatives, the lower house of the US legislature. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

A statement from the politician’s office confirmed that he was one of those injured in the attack.

Law enforcement authorities in the US have said that the shooting appears to be a 'deliberate attack'

"Prior to entering surgery, the whip was in good spirits and spoke to his wife by phone," the statement said. "He is grateful for the brave actions of U.S. Capitol Police, first responders and colleagues."

Law enforcement authorities in the US have said that the shooting appears to be a “deliberate attack”, with the shooter being arrested a short time after the incident.

US President Donald Trump released a statement on Wednesday in which he said himself and VP Mike Pence were aware of the attack.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy,” Trump said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected.”
