Ecommerce giant Amazon rented out over a quarter of warehouse space available in the UK this year, as the US company continues to grow its reputation in the country.

A large increase in online shopping has led to a boom in warehousing this year, forcing the likes of Amazon and others to seek more storage options.

Research carried out by property agency Savills also found that a huge 82% of online shopping deals were conducted through Amazon, cementing its dominance as the market leader.

"This year, online retailers have accounted for a third of the market - an unprecedented amount. We’ve had a surge in demand as online brands grow their supply chains in order to compete against traditional retailers, and leading that charge is Amazon," said research director for Savills Kevin Mofid.

The Seattle-based company has been pushing hard with its Amazon Prime service, which gives customers benefits such as discounts on products when they sign up to the monthly subscription.

The boom in demand is thought to have limited supply in certain areas however, as local governments allocate land for industrial buildings, which may lead to higher costs and consumers picking up the bill.
